Höffe I 321 Freedom/Fichte/Höffe: Fichte understands his entire thinking as an analysis of the concept of freedom: According to his basic idea, the true beginning of all knowledge is an event of freedom. However, the entire knowledge does not originate "in" a freedom, but "arises freely". This insight, which is original in a factual sense, has an enormous scope. Neither the theoretical nor the practical knowledge comes about of its own accord, without a personal contribution. During the French occupation of Berlin, he fought with pathos-laden speeches to the German nation (1808) against Napoleon's foreign rule, for maturity, for independent intellectual activity and for a love of the fatherland permeated by it.
