Johann Gottlieb Fichte on Freedom - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 321
Freedom/Fichte/Höffe: Fichte understands his entire thinking as an analysis of the concept of freedom: According to his basic idea, the true beginning of all knowledge is an event of freedom. However, the entire knowledge does not originate "in" a freedom, but "arises freely". This insight, which is original in a factual sense, has an enormous scope. Neither the theoretical nor the practical knowledge comes about of its own accord, without a personal contribution. The subject must rather get involved with knowledge, open itself to truth and to morality (first principle of the doctrine of science)(1) and at the same time obey it (second principle).

During the French occupation of Berlin, he fought with pathos-laden speeches to the German nation (1808) against Napoleon's foreign rule, for maturity, for independent intellectual activity and for a love of the fatherland permeated by it.
Höffe: Fichte's philosophy of freedom inspires early romanticism carried by literary critics and

writers. Carried by Tieck, the two brothers Schlegel and Novalis, it influenced the literature, painting, science and philosophy of almost all European countries.
